The Alhambra proposes exploring the most intimate spaces of the monument to see how Carlos V and Isabel de Portugal lived during their stay in Granada in 1526. The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, attached to the Consejería de Cultura, Patrimonio Histórico y Deporte, has organised two programmes of guided tours by specialists as part of the commemoration of the V Centenary of that stay.
Two different routes
The first proposal, the Visita Carolina a la Casa Real de la Alhambra, enters spaces such as the Mexuar hall, the Harén courtyard or the Peinador de la Reina. The route brings visitors closer to the daily life of the imperial couple, the rooms they may have used and the difficulties of adapting the old palaces to a court accustomed to more comforts and ceremonies. It takes place on October 24 and 31, November 4, 21 and 28, December 12 and 19 and January 9, 2027.
The second, the Visita Carolina y Poliorcética de la Alcazaba de la Alhambra, focuses on the military and defensive dimension. It passes through the puerta vieja de la Alcazaba, the baluarte de la Mezquita de cabe Darro or the Caballerizas, and explains how the fortifications evolved in response to the new defence needs of the modern era. Its dates are October 25, November 15 and 22, December 13 and 20 and January 10, 2027.
A court at the Alhambra
According to the Patronato, the 1526 stay was much more than a honeymoon: Granada became the temporary seat of the court and the setting for political decisions of an empire extending across much of Europe. The couple found an Alhambra marked by the legacy of the Reyes Católicos, and the needs for accommodation and representation led to important changes in the palatine spaces. Accommodation difficulties even led Isabel de Portugal to move her residence to the recently built monastery of San Jerónimo. The itineraries also address the evolution of the complex as a residence of the houses of Austria and Bourbon and its conversion into a national monument in the 19th century.
Both visits are led by Juan Antonio Vilar Sánchez, doctor in Modern and Contemporary History from the universities of Nimega (Países Bajos) and Granada, a specialist in Carlos V and author of publications on this period.
Tickets and dates
Tickets cost 12.73 euros and are already available on the official ticket sales website of the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife. The visits are spread between October 24 and January 10, 2027, on the dates indicated for each of the two routes.
