First- and second-year medical interns and residents (MIR) in Andalucía have open a new edition of the course «Manejo de la diabetes hospitalaria y de las descompensaciones agudas de la diabetes». It is promoted by the Comprehensive Diabetes Plan of Andalucía and the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP), under the Regional Ministry of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies.
What is learned
The training aims for residents to know how to decide in situations frequent in clinical practice: setting glycemic control targets, starting and adjusting insulin, dealing with acute decompensations and special clinical situations, and organizing a safe discharge from hospital.
The course lasts 26 hours and is done through self-learning on the virtual campus. It is organized into four units: care for the person with diabetes in the emergency department, management within the hospital of stable and critical patients, therapeutic education and the transition to discharge, and diabetes in special clinical situations. It begins with an initial test to determine the starting level, continues with content and multimedia materials from the teaching team and ends with a final test.
The results of the first edition
The previous call was passed by 555 residents and obtained an overall satisfaction of 9.17 out of 10. By sections, the objectives achieved 9.24; the contents, 9.21; the methodology and resources, 9.13; and professional usefulness, 9.23. 92.9 % of participants rated professional usefulness as very high, and in the Practical Usefulness Form 96.3 % of those who responded indicated that the course had helped them quite a lot or a lot to improve their practice, with an average of 4.59 out of 5.
Pilar Navarro, coordinator of the training at the EASP, notes that the aim has been for the course «to be closely linked to the situations that residents encounter in their daily practice» and that the results of the first edition show learning that they can transfer to on-call shifts and to the care of people with diabetes in hospital.
How to register
Interested first- and second-year MIR residents should check their email to confirm that they have received the full program and the registration. If not, they can access the course page at the EASP. Registration remains open until May 26, 2027 and the training can be completed until June 30, 2027.
