The nuclear medicine departments at the Puerta del Mar hospital in Cádiz and the Reina Sofía hospital in Córdoba will have new PET-CT equipment. The Governing Council has authorised a credit transfer of 6,279,900 euros to finance their replacement, according to the Junta de Andalucía.

What changes for patients

The new devices will make it possible to obtain images of higher diagnostic quality in less time. In some procedures a lower dose of radiopharmaceutical will be administered. They will also make it easier to detect small lesions or lesions with low metabolic uptake, which helps in making more appropriate clinical decisions. For anyone undergoing a scan, the test will be shorter and more comfortable, something the Junta particularly highlights for people who have difficulty staying still for long periods.

What PET-CT is

PET-CT combines anatomical and functional information and is one of the main tools for precision diagnosis, because it makes it possible to detect tumour lesions with high sensitivity. The nuclear medicine departments of the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) also carry out scintigraphy, SPECT and SPECT-CT studies, in vitro diagnostic tests, radioisotope treatments and radioguided surgery procedures.

Where the money comes from

The measure is financed with a credit transfer within the budget programme for Healthcare of the SAS, which gives priority to replacement investments considered strategic for maintaining care capacity. The Junta frames the measure within its strategy for modernising healthcare infrastructure and equipment and states that with it it is making progress in improving resources for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
