The fifth edition of the Wine and Sea Fair (VIMAR) is held this Monday, October 26, and Tuesday, October 27, at the Espacio Multifuncional del Paseo de Santa Fe in Huelva. It brings together 49 participating companies and entities, of which 28 are Andalusian, according to the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development.

The weight of fishing in Huelva

The regional minister for the sector, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has stated at the opening that wine and seafood products are "two of the great hallmarks of Andalusia and represent employment, tradition and opportunities." The province has 451 vessels, practically one in three of the Andalusian fishing fleet. In Isla Cristina and Ayamonte alone, the sector generates nearly 2,000 jobs and a combined turnover of 133.5 million euros, according to the figures provided by the minister.

Vineyards and wineries

Across Andalusia there are around 2,500 agricultural holdings dedicated to vineyards, covering some 22,700 hectares, and 28 quality mentions linked to the sector. In Huelva, the wine sector has 27 wineries between the DOP Condado de Huelva and the IGP Vino Naranja Condado de Huelva, with a vineyard area of between 1,500 and 1,600 hectares, to which the DOP Vinagres del Condado de Huelva is added. The zalema variety accounts for 92 % of production.

What can be seen

The fair is conceived as a space to establish commercial relations, share experiences and explore new markets, with an international and cross-border character. Fernández-Pacheco has stated that "the true protagonists of this fair are the farmers, fishermen and companies, who with their effort and dedication make our products recognized for their quality and excellence."

Challenges of the sector

The minister has mentioned among the challenges of the fishing sector the increase in production costs and the need to guarantee the sustainability of resources.
