The bell of the Torre de la Vela of the Alhambra rang again this Sunday, October 18, for a reason different from the usual one: to remember Federico García Lorca on the ninetieth anniversary of his murder. The ringing took place at twelve noon and lasted for three minutes. Half an hour later it was heard again, with a sequence of three rings every eight seconds.

A day of music and memory

The ringing was part of 'Réquiem por Lorca', an artistic initiative promoted by the Fundación García Lorca that has brought music and memory to different spaces in the city. At the Alhambra, in addition to the Torre de la Vela, the Plaza de los Aljibes and the Silla del Moro also took part. One of the central elements of the proposal has been 'Campanas por el poeta', the composition by Enrique Morente, which according to the organization symbolically links the poet from Fuente Vaqueros with another of the great voices of Granada's culture.

The role of the Patronato

The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, under the Consejería de Cultura, Patrimonio Histórico y Deporte, took part in the initiative with the ringing of the bell. The councillor of the department, Patricia del Pozo, has stated that «the Alhambra is an exceptional monument that we have the responsibility to conserve and protect, but it is also a living space, deeply linked to the cultural history of Granada». Del Pozo also stressed the collaboration between institutions and cultural entities to spread Lorca's legacy and strengthen the cultural projection of Granada.
