UNIA brings international scientists together in Baeza to study cell memory

The Universidad Internacional de Andalucía is holding an meeting on transcriptional memory from October 20 to 22 at the Sede Antonio Machado in Baeza, focusing on how cells maintain their function throughout life and what fails in some diseases.

·

The Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA) has begun at the Sede Antonio Machado in Baeza (Jaén) the second of the international scientific meetings on Biomedicine of the 2026 edition. It is held from October 20 to 22 and is titled Transcriptional memory in health and disease.

What is studied

The meeting examines the molecular basis that allows cells and tissues to carry out their function throughout life and how the failure or alteration of these mechanisms influences various human diseases. UNIA notes that this event seeks to advance the understanding of cell identity and its therapeutic applications in biomedicine.

Who participates

The workshop is organized by Irene Hernando-Herraez, from the Laboratory of Epigenetics and Single Cell Dynamics at the IBMB-CSIC, in Barcelona; David Landeira, from the Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO) in Granada, and Pablo Navarro, from the Institut Pasteur in Paris (France). Among the participating scientists are Ángel Barco, from the Instituto de Neurociencias CSIC-UMH, an expert in epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms of neuronal plasticity and memory; Sui Huang, from the Institute for Systems Biology, in the United States; John Greally, from the Center for Epigenomics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, also in the United States, and Leonid Mirny, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as detailed by the university.

Next event in November

These meetings are scheduled by the Centro Especializado de Apoyo a la Investigación (CEAI) of UNIA, with the aim of promoting international cooperation and scientific exchange in Biomedicine between Andalusian researchers and the international scientific community. The 2026 edition includes a third and final meeting: DNA-Protein Crosslinks: Mechanisms and Links to Rare Genetic Disorders, organized by Iván V. Rosado, from the Centro Andaluz de Biología y Medicina Regenerativa (CABIMER), and Fernando Gómez-Herreros, from the Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS). It is scheduled from November 18 to 20.

Institutional welcome

The director of the Sede Antonio Machado in Baeza, José Manuel Castro, and the director of the CEAI of UNIA, Juan Jiménez, have welcomed the participants to this international scientific meeting.
