The Maimónides Institute for Biomedical Research of Córdoba (IMIBIC) and the Reina Sofía University Hospital have brought together more than one hundred specialists in training at the first Research Conference for Residents. The aim is to bring research closer to those who are still training as specialists, to awaken scientific vocations and to facilitate their first steps in developing projects.

From the consultation to the project

The conference is held at the IMIBIC facilities under the slogan "Research during residency: opportunities and first steps". Researchers, clinical specialists and training managers take part, sharing their experience and offering practical tools to transform the questions that arise in the consultation, on shifts or in daily patient care into scientific projects. The morning programme addresses why to research during residency, how to turn a clinical problem into a study and what resources are available to start. The specialists Juan Luis Romero Cabrera and Cristian Rodelo-Haad spoke with presentations on the value of research in training and on the first steps to design a study. Afterwards, a round table on IMIBIC presented its research lines and groups and the collaboration opportunities for residents from different specialties.

Thesis, research career and patents

The session also covers methodological, biostatistical and documentary support resources, guidance from tutors and ethics committees, and innovation, intellectual property and patent procedures. In the afternoon, the start of the doctoral thesis, the possibilities of developing a research and teaching career and the professional opportunities of biomedical research are explored in greater depth, with a practical session to contact research groups and join their projects. The hospital currently has around 500 clinical trials, according to IMIBIC and the health centre, which broadens patients' opportunities to access new therapeutic alternatives. The event is part of the activities for the 50th anniversary of the Reina Sofía Hospital.

Presentations

The hospital's managing director, Francisco Triviño, said at the opening that "you residents are not only the future of the Reina Sofía Hospital. You are also a very important part of our present". The scientific director of IMIBIC, Pablo Pérez Martínez, and representatives of specialised training and research at the health complex also took part in the opening.
